| Traditional incarceration for women transcends mere deprivation of liberty; it leads to the fracturing of familial bonds and the exacerbation of psychosocial trauma, highlighting an imperative shift in penal policy toward community-based sentencing. However, examining the multidimensional lifeworld of women and the relationship between legal structures and their social realities remains an under-researched area requiring systematic investigation. This study addresses the core question of what semantic patterns regarding the functions and challenges of this penal policy emerge from women’s multifaceted experiences with non-custodial sentences, using a meta-synthesis approach. Adopting a qualitative methodology, this research analyzes and integrates 14 domestic studies on women’s encounters with incarceration and alternative punishments to reconstruct the semantic patterns of these lived experiences. The thematic analysis of the accumulated literature reveals that women perceive prison as a crisis-inducing, traumatic, and identity-altering event, whereas community-based sentences facilitate the preservation of familial bonds, the enhancement of self-esteem, and gradual reintegration into normal life. The meta-synthesis yielded five core themes: structural erosion and re-entry crises within the prison-centric paradigm; patriarchal hegemony and the reproduction of inequality in sentencing; new approaches to theorizing the transition from incarceration; the supportive and reintegrative functions of alternative sentencing; and the institutional requirements for implementing decarceration policies. These findings delineate a multidimensional lifeworld in which criminal justice, from women’s perspectives, demands a profound, gender-sensitive, and community-oriented redefinition, incorporating distinctively female perceptions of both incarceration and social punishment. | ||
