| The fifth century witnessed fundamental changes in the inscriptions on Sasanian coins. From the late fourth century, the relatively uniform list of legitimizing Sasanian titles changed due to social, religious, and political changes. By the late fifth century, all of these titles had been eliminated and were replaced by titles that reflected the changing political ideology at the Sasanian court. This article examines the meaning and concept of the legend of “nwky” on the coins of Yazdgird II. Today, most numismatists believe it is the transliteration of Middle Persian (MP) nōg, meaning “new”, widely used in Zoroastrian and Manichaean Middle Persian texts. However, it seems that no convincing reason has been proposed for the minting of this legend. This article attempts to answer the question of what the concept of this legend is and what the purpose of the Sasanian court was in inserting it, using textual background and linguistic analysis. The author believes this legend is a part of the compound nōg xwarrah, which was struck on Yazdgird II’s coins as a legitimizing title due to political-military changes in his battles with the nomadic tribes on the eastern frontiers and After Yazdgird’s death, it appeared on the official seal of his son, Pērōz, as nōg xwarrah abzud. | ||
