Background: Microplastics (MPs), which are emerging environmental contaminants measuring approximately less than 5mm in diameter, have garnered significant attention in recent years. Nevertheless, there is still a scarcity of data concerning the hazards posed by MPs to animals, particularly larger mammals. Objectives: This study examined polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) impact on colon and liver tissue to detect potential inflammation. Methods: During this experiment, we subjected male mice to a concentration of 2 μm of PS-MPs for six weeks. Adult male mice were randomly assigned to four groups of nine mice each. PS-MPs was administered to three groups of mice at a dose of 0.001, 0.01and 1 mg/kg per day by gevage. Result: The findings indicated that PS-MPs were detected in the gastrointestinal tracts of mice, leading to an impairment of the intestinal tissue structure. Inflammatory factors increased. Furthermore, the increase of β-catenin and HIF-1α mRNA expression was observed in the groups treated with PS-MPs. PS-MPs also caused several disorders in the tissue structure of the liver, which interfere with the digestive process by affecting the production of bile acids. Conclusions: This study presented additional data on the toxicity of PS-MPs in a land-dwelling creature, with the purpose of assisting in the evaluation of the health hazards posed by PS-MPs to animals. | ||
